![]() ![]() SnagIt's interface is the model of simplicity. Beyond that, the application also has "video" and "editable text" modes for even more flexibility.įigure 1. SnagIt not only lets you easily capture anything that's on your Windows screen, it provides you with a host of tools to modify, mark-up, and export your images to a variety of file formats. That is, unless you've discovered "SnagIt," an advanced screen capture program from TechSmith. But within the standard Windows environment, you don't really have a lot of options for tailoring your screenshots to meet the particular needs of your project. Screenshots are particularly helpful and don't require a college degree in technical drawing. Well-placed illustrations can save you lots of verbiage while adding interest to your tutorial. But even the best writers have difficulty repeatedly explaining which button to click or window to open without the text descending to the depths of utter boredom. The Web is a terrific resource for helpful tutorials. Single user's license can be purchased from the TechSmith site for $39.95 USD. This program is compatible with Windows 3.1, 95, 98, and NT. The accompanying SnagIt Studio allows you to annotate your screen shots. This is poor business practice, and at the very least patches should be released to allow the older version to function on newer operating systems as we did pay for the sofware.SnagIt captures screen images, text, and video from your Windows desktop. If you upgrade your operating system you run the risk of not being able to run an older version of SnagIt, but you have to purchase a new version if you want to update the one that you have if it's running into issues. Support is literally non-existent unless you pay for a maintenance agreement. The time continually increases until you have no choice but to wipe out everything SnagIt related (including the plist files), and then reinstalling, only to run into the same vicious cycle a month down the road. After being used on a daily basis it frequently takes about 5 minutes to start recording a video. Having used SnagIt for close to 7 years now it is unreliable at best. It is also feature-rich as compared to other screen capture software which makes it hard to switch to a competitor. SnagIt, when it works, is an extremely useful tool for creating videos on the fly or taking quick screenshots that you need to annotate. For it's basic intended use of screen capture it's everything I need.Ĭomments: It has been a trainwreck of an experience, but given that it has many of the resources that I need to perform my job that other capturing software does not I'm stuck with it. I'd just like to easily customize things for personal preference. What they have is functional and easy to use. ![]() I'd like a little more options for adding arrows, call-outs, and text post-capture. The captures are high quality and easy to retrieve, edit, share. I use it for customer support, training, and providing feedback to other software vendors. Note: not a monthly subscription but an annual fee. I've been using Snagit for at least 10 years and am on the inexpensive annual maintenance plan where I get all updates and latest version. I also have their other software Camtasia and the two work seamlessly. I've been a constant user for well over 10 years. I also use it to communicate with graphic designers and tech support for other apps. I use it to create how-to video and handouts for customer training and support. Comments: I have a software company and am a writer. ![]()
